Understanding Your Lipid Panel
Total Cholesterol
Sum of all cholesterol in your blood. Less meaningful alone - ratios tell a better story.
LDL ("Bad") Cholesterol
Deposits cholesterol in artery walls. Lower is generally better, especially with other risk factors.
HDL ("Good") Cholesterol
Removes cholesterol from arteries. Higher is protective - levels above 60 mg/dL reduce heart disease risk.
Triglycerides
Fat in the blood from recent meals and stored body fat. Elevated levels linked to heart disease and metabolic syndrome.
